Yesterday, Taiyo Oil held the FY2025 entrance ceremony for new employees.
The following is the message from the president to new employees.
Message to New Employees
Congratulations on joining our company today.
At the job offer ceremony last year, I remember saying, “I hope you will fully enjoy your remaining time as students, and I hope to see your energetic looks at the entrance ceremony for new employees.”
It was not a request for you to act with the responsibility of working adults or to go about your work seriously. Rather, I wanted to convey that the stage you are standing on would be changing. This is not an exaggeration, but rather, it is something like whether you are standing on a soccer field or a baseball field. There is enjoyment that is unique to students, just like there is enjoyment that is unique to working adults. Both students and working adults also have hardships and difficulties. My wish was that you would first fully live out your lives as students. How did you do in this aspect?
There may be some of you who did not manage to lead the student lives that you wanted.
Honestly, I was one such person. I tried to devote myself to American football, but I was faced with nothing but my pathetic self, and I graduated with great frustration. This was how I started, and it serves as my driving force.
However, whether the present moment is good or bad depends on your actions going forward. Do you know the song “Sasanqua” by the artiste SEKAI NO OWARI? It was the NHK theme song for the 2018 Winter Olympics. This song has a line that says, “If I give up here, I’ll feel sorry for everything I’ve done so far” (excerpt from “Sasanqua” by SEKAI NO OWARI, lyrics by Fukase and Saori, composed by Fukase and Nakajin, 2018). Giving up or not is just an example. There are times when one chooses the option of giving up. Here, I hope that you will not take actions that will make you feel sorry for your past selves. How you color your past selves depends on how you live your lives going forward. The company will support you in living the lives that you want.
Let me share the story of the bricklayers found in Aesop’s Fables.
When bricklayers were asked about what they were doing, one answered, “I’m laying bricks.” Another answered, “I’m building a wall.” A third answered, “I’m building a church.”
The one who answered that he was building a church was able to go about his work positively and enjoy it as he laid bricks while imagining the people who would pray there and receive blessings in the future.
You may be faced with tedious and difficult work. However, if you come to see that what lies ahead is self-actualization and the fulfillment of dreams, I think your daily work will also become positive and enjoyable.
I hope you will talk about your dreams and goals with your fellow colleagues.
Lastly, while I earlier extended my congratulations to you on joining the company, I personally feel grateful to you for joining us. It is my responsibility to make this company into an amazing one where people can say “congratulations” sincerely. Let us do our best together going forward.
