Launch of a Regionally Distributed Chemical Recycling Business for Waste Plastics in the Chugoku and Shikoku Regions

2026.05.25

Taiyo Oil Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Takahiro Yamamoto; “Taiyo Oil” hereinafter) and NAGASAKI Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture; President and CEO: Fumio Yamazaki; “NAGASAKI” hereinafter) are announcing that they have agreed to begin a resource recycling business based on oil conversion and chemical recycling, targeting used plastics discharged from the Chugoku and Shikoku regions (“Regions” hereinafter).

In this business, NAGASAKI will use waste plastics that it collects and sorts within the Regions as raw material to produce waste plastic pyrolysis oil at a small-scale oil conversion unit to be newly installed at the company, and will supply it to Taiyo Oil. Taiyo Oil will receive this at its Shikoku Operations (Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture) and process it using existing petroleum refining facilities to manufacture and sell various chemically recycled products.

To begin with, starting from the processing of waste plastics discharged by businesses, the plan is to process on the scale of 800 tons per year, and moving forward, with a view to also processing plastic containers and packaging collected from city residents, the processing capacity will be expanded in stages.

Through this business, even waste plastics that had been considered difficult to recycle for reasons such as contamination or mixed materials can be reused as resources once again through chemical recycling. This is expected to contribute to the realization of a circular economy and also to strengthening economic security through the effective use of domestic resources.

By advancing efforts toward chemical recycling that leverages the advanced impurity-removal capabilities of its refinery facilities, Taiyo Oil will broaden the path to utilizing waste plastics once again as chemical feedstock and work to promote resource recycling.
